AbstractA brief status report of an ongoing scientific case study of the Advanced Laser Interferometer Antenna (ALIA) mission is presented. Key technology requirements and primary science objectives of the mission are covered in the study. Possible descope options for the mission and the corresponding compromise in science are also considered and compared. Our preliminary study indicates that ALIA holds promise in mapping out the mass and spin distribution of intermediate mass black holes possibly present in dense star clusters at low redshift as well as in shedding important light on the structure formation in the early Universe.

Funding OrganizationWe are very grateful to Peter Bender for sharing with us many of his thoughts and insights concerning ALIA. The mission study is partially funded by the 'Space Advanced Gravity Measurement' project commissioned by the Space Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. We are also grateful to the NSFC of China and DFG of Germany for the support through the Sino-German exchange program. XG is supported by the Knowledge Innovative Program of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (no KJCX3-SYW-S03) and the NSFC under grant no 10775140. RS is supported by the Chinese Academy of Sciences Visiting Professorship for Senior International Scientists, grant no 2009S1-5 (The Silk Road Project).
