AbstractA model containing two microscopic parameters, i.e. inclusion size and fine granular area size (FGA) is proposed for the estimation of fatigue strength or S-N curve of high-strength steels with fish-eye failure mode for very-high-cycle-fatigue (VHCF). The estimation results indicate that the effect of inclusion size on fatigue strength is related to the relative size of inclusion to FGA. Based on the model simulation and experimental data, the paper shows that the stress intensity factor range at the front of FGA is a constant which corresponds to the threshold value of crack propagation. The results also indicate that the FGA size can be obtained in terms of stress intensity factor range at the front of FGA and the stress amplitude for high-strength steels with fish-eye failure mode in VHCF regime.
