AbstractEstimation of possible maximal scour depth around the head of spur dikes is an important step in the design of spur dikes foundation. This paper briefly analyses the characteristics of flow pattern and the complex eddy structure near the head of the spur dike. The strong rotational flow exhibits high shear stress resulting in intense local scour. Staring from the sediment continuity equation and the eddy's pick-up action on the sediment, a semiempirical method for unsteady flow and stratified bed case has been established to show the time evolution of the local scour around the spur dike head. The method proposed in the present paper has been applied to simulate the local scour process of S1 and S2 spur dikes of the waterway project in the Yangtze River estuary. The computed and measured depths of scour holes agree fairly well with each other exhibiting its satisfactory prediction capability.
