Numerical simulation of thermal destruction of POPs agents in a reductive plasma-arc reactor and steam injected for syngas recovery

AbstractDestruction of hazardous Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) agent in a 30 kW DC plasma-arc reactor has been simulated and the destruction and removal efficiency (DRE) is investigated in this paper. Due to similar to several POPs at chemical structure such as DDT and PCBs, pure chlorobenzene (C 6H5CI) is selected as the model material. Because the arc temperature attains 5000 K and the average temperature exceeds 1800 K in reaction area, the chlorinated organics, which are difficult to be destructed in conventional incinerators, can be rapidly pyrolyzed into simple molecules. Combined commercial software of FLUENT and CHEMKIN is used to simulate temperature field, velocity field, products concentration distribution and the relationship between feeding rate and the temperature in reaction area. Steam is injected into the reactor for syngas recovery and recovered energy from the produced syngas increases when the reaction temperature increases. The process acts as energy transformation - electrical energy is restored in the syngas. At the ideal temperature of POPs treatment, the appropriate range of steam content (α) where ratio of energy recovered to energy input (β) gets to maximum is estimated. According to the results of numerical simulation, a conclusion can be drawn that the plasma-arc technology is environmentally friendly and economically feasible for disposal of POPs agents.
