An investigation of the aerodynamic noise of long-grouped high speed trains

Abstract It is difficult to assess the noise level of long-grouped high speed trains, which can only be accomplished by real train experiments. Because of the complexity of the shape of a long-grouped high speed trains and the corresponding significant computational cost for computational aeroacoustics calculations, the noise assessment remains an unsolved field for numerical simulation of the aerodynamic noise for long-grouped high speed trains. In this paper, the relationship of carriage number and noise level in the far field is analyzed both theoretically and numerically. Based on the assumption of linear source and equal sound power for the middle carriages, the relationship between the carriage number and noise level for the single observation point in the far field is obtained. Then the relationship between the carriage number and the equivalent continuous sound pressure level is derived. In order to verify the reasonableness of the theoretical results, numerical simulations have been performed for high speed trains with different carriages. Numerical results agree well with the theoretical results. Results reveal that the noise level of a long-grouped high speed train could be predicted by the theoretical formula on the basis of the results of a short-grouped high speed train. Results in this paper could aid in the noise assessment of long-grouped high speed trains. © Civil-Comp Press, 2016.
