AbstractIn this study, we performed laboratory experiments and numerical modeling to investigate the responses of soil layers surrounding a suction bucket under cyclic loads. Specially designed centrifugal experiments were conducted to obtain preliminary results. Numerical modeling using FLAC(3D) was then conducted for a sensitivity analysis of the controlling factors on the responses, for which the distribution characteristics of deformation and excess pore pressure are the main focuses. Our studies indicate that the excess pore pressure and the deformation develop gradually to a stable state, while the peak and fluctuation amplitude of those responses decrease with the increase in the bucket's radius, elastic modulus and cohesion and with the decrease in the load amplitude and frequency. Along the depth of the bucket, there is an inflection point of the displacement and excess pore pressure.
