AbstractFormation mechanism of layered fracture and outburst in soils is investigated. It is shown that once the pore pressure is high enough to cause the over-cap failure, layered fracture or outburst occurs in liquefied or gasified sediments. The formation conditions are related to the strength of sediments and the boundary friction.
