AbstractInvestigations have revealed that the formation and the development of shea fatigue cracks for some metallic materials present collective evolution characteristics. The cumulation of damage is associated with the initiation and the growth of a number of short cracks. The extent of fatigue damage depends on the cumulative behaviour of the total number of dispersed short cracks. This paper attempts to further investigate the collective damage of short fatigue cracks. The test material is a stainless steel The plate type specimen was used in push-pull fatigue testing. Two groups of specimens with different average grain diameters were prepared. The values of average grain diameter are 72 mu m and 207 mu m respectively. The evolutionary process of short cracks was obtained, showing the variation of the number of cracks per unit area with the normalized fatigue cycles and the normalized crack length. The evolutionary characteristics of specimens with large and small grain sizes were compared. The results show the specimen with smaller grain size is of better fatigue resistance in comparison to the specimen with large grain size. The experiments also show that shea crack regime takes up a predominant part of total fatigue life for the two groups of specimens. Based on the experimental observations, the relationship of the total number of short cracks versus normalized fatigue cycles is discussed.
